50 years ago, the sugar industry quietly paid scientists to point the blame at fat. You must have seen reference intakes on food labels. These show you the maximum amount of nutrients and calories that should be consumed in a day. You've probably heard about having your 5 a day too. It's all nonsense.
The Government issued these intakes as to what they believe an adult's diet should consist of. They are as follows (see picture).
Good Fats are essential to the body. They provide a fuel source as well as regulating optimal hormonal levels etc. These are found in foods like cheeses, nuts and certain oils. But if an overweight person followed these guidelines they would be asking for obesity, let alone if a diabetic followed these intakes; the problems the 90g sugars would cause for their blood sugar levels. 90g of sugar is the same as eating at least 22 teaspoons of sugar, leading to many problems. Obesity statistics from the UK Parliament show that as of 2018, 40% of adults in the UK are overweight and 26% are obese. That means 66% of people in the UK are at risk of health problems. Furthermore, an adult training in weight lifting will be deprived of protein intake if they follow these guidelines at 50g protein a day. This is why we must remember these are only guidelines.
Tip: People are very misinformed on what foods they think are healthy and what they should eat. The only way is to educate yourself or to seek advice from a fitness professional or consultant. Forget what you heard or think and ask yourself are you healthy and where you want to be.
