Before you start something it is a good idea to set yourself some goals beforehand. By setting goals you allow the possibility and drive to motivate you to achieve them. This could be anything from wanting to lower your body fat % ,to getting stronger, following a fitness routine or training for an event. Goals can push you in a positive way by making you want to reach more new targets each time goals are met.
A common mistake people make is that they set themselves goals which are very unreasonable and unrealistic ; this will prove to be counterproductive as you will not be doing things gradually and by jumping in the deep in straight away it just adds unnecessary pressure on you. This is why structure is needed.
The way to set out a correct plan is by setting yourself attainable goals that will not strain you or lead to injuries from far fetched expectations. For example every week make it your target to run for longer than last time or to increase your strength by performing more strength based exercises with greater volume over time.

Tip: Whether your goals are short term to increase the amount of push ups by 10 more you did 2 days ago or to lose 5kg in a month just remember to keep setting yourself goals to keep you focused and keep you determined of what your purpose is in health and fitness.
