Overtraining fact or fiction

After a lengthy time into working out and following an exercise routine for months or years, it is possible to develop patterns that could mean you are overtraining. Overtraining basically means when someone trains excessively for too long or hard which leads to the body going beyond its ability to recover from heavy exercise. Exercising can be taxing on your hormones and cause a general strain to your system. Some signs which may indicate that you are overtraining include:

1) Elevated resting heart rate
2) Insomnia (sleep problems)
3) Emotional changes
4) Muscular soreness
5) Poor performance

Tip: If you see any of these signs of overtraining it is wise to stop exercising for a week or two allowing your central nervous system and body adequate time to recover fully and resume training depending on how you feel. In the meantime feel free to still do some light exercise in the form of walking, using light weights or fewer repetitions on an exercise and shortening the time of any activity you do.
