In a mental or biological context stress is a physical, mental or emotional factor that causes bodily or mental tension. This can be strain/tension caused by adverse or demanding circumstances. Stress is a normal part of life that can help us to overcome situations or on the other hand it can lead to more serious problems such as high blood pressure. An increase in the stress hormone cortisol has been shown to increase appetite, driving cravings for unhealthy food and thus making it easy to accumulate belly fat.

Stress makes you feel low and significantly reduces motivation levels to do positive things and exercise. The management of stress is dependant mainly on the ability and willingness of a person to make the necessary changes for a healthy lifestyle.

Tips to cut stress: Regular exercise, meditation/relaxation, seeking family or friendly support (social support), structured timeouts and learning new techniques to reduce and cope with stress.
